The NCLEX-RN, or the National Council Licensure Examination, is the standardised test that all aspiring nurses must pass in order to practise in the United States.

The NCLEX-RN is formatted as a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT), meaning that the questions are modified according to how well or how poorly you are answering them.

Because the computer adapts the test to your individual performance, every nurse will write a different kind of NCLEX-RN. With the introduction of Next Gen questions, the minimum length of the exam will be 85 questions (70 scored and 15 unscored) and the maximum 150 questions (135 scored and 15 unscored). “Within the minimum-length exam, there will be 52 stand-alone questions and 3 case studies (each case has six questions for a total of 18 questions) that will be scored and contribute to the pass/fail decision” (Next Generation NCLEX News, Winter 2022). However, candidates may receive up to two more unscored case studies (total of 5) as part of the pre-test questions.. No matter what, the exam will terminate after five hours of testing, and you will be issued either a pass or a fail report (no scores).
